This film offers a new spin on the movie heist genre with an incredible cast. Unfortunately it’s all star cast became its downfall.
Widows follows four women who are thrown together once their thieving significant others are killed in a heist gone wrong. Viola Davis (Veronica) steals each scene she is in, but it’s the same character we have seen from her in Suicide Squad, Fences, Blackhat, and Scandal. The headstrong take no prisoners woman in charge.
The film also includes Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal (for a minute), Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Colin Farrell, and Robert Duvall. I feel that this many great actors caused this movie to crash as they were all fighting to screen time and character development. Not one character was ever flushed out enough for the audience to become sympathetic to their journey. You often get the feeling that Daniel Kaluuya (the main bad guy) is acting in a completely different movie than the rest of the cast.
The fun twist towards the end of the film cannot make up for the amount of plot holes that will leave you with more questions than answers. What could have been great quickly became a letdown.
I agree with your observation of this movie but not your rating. I think the holes in the plot and the lack of character development sunk this move. I really didn’t care if they got away with their plan and really made it hard for me to enjoy. I would vote Saget.
