Solo: A Star Wars Story (Spoilers Below)
I am not a huge Star Wars fan, but I feel all of these movies are events. Meaning they are must see in theaters. Going in, I had heard all the negative reviews and about all the issues the studio had when it came to making this movie. But I did not care about any of those things because I love Chewbacca. I feel Ron Howard did a great job shooting this film and took us to some fun new locations from the Star Wars universe. The cast gave great performances including Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo.
Pros: The opening craw was great the way it was shot. Ron Howard did a great job directing this flick. Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover where the two stand outs in my opinion. The special effects were on point. I loved the train hijack scene, probably one of my favorites. Han shot first, once you see the movie you will understand.
Cons: The overall story was underwhelming to me. I did not like how Han and Chewie met. Never in any of the other movies did Han ever speak Wookiee to Chewie, but now all of the sudden he does. Rio was a disposable character and could have been much more. I did not understand how Beckett was able to get over the loss of Val and Rio so quickly. The use of Enfys Nest character was a complete waist. I feel like they wasted the Kessel Run and could have made that more enjoyable for fans of Millennium Falcon. My biggest complaint, being a causal Star Wars fan I could not understand how Darth Maul had a cameo.
My overall opinion of Solo: Did we need this movie in the Star Wars universe? No. But was this a fun movie with new things to explore from that universe? Yes.
On a scale of 1-10, I give this movie a 6. There were too many plot points missed to make this a truly enjoyable Star Wars movie.
